How to pill a cat

Pilling a cat can be difficult if you don’t have a strategy planned out. Most cats hate pills and are unwilling to cooperate with you in terms of easily taking their medication. The video above outlines a simple way to gently get your cat to take and swallow their pills!

  1. Position the cat between your legs (no need to grip tightly, the purpose here to is keep them from backing up and away from you ONLY)

  2. Open the cat’s jaw by hooking one finger between the gums, avoiding the canine teeth

  3. Toss the pill in the cat’s mouth, making sure to place the pill ABOVE and not below the tongue for easy swallowing.

  4. Massage the cat’s throat until you see that the cat has swallowed. This step is important, many cats will hold a pill in their mouths and spit it out later, so make sure to watch for swallowing! Sure signs of swallowing are viewable in the video above - chewing and tongue motions.

  5. Release the cat!
